Here’s a list of hotels you’ll actually WANT to stay at and explore the city from. Whenever family or friends come to town there’s always a moment of trying hard to get them okay with sleeping on your couch or in your “home office” because all the hotels are in the financial district or tourist parts of town (read as: far away from where we actually live). It’s a hassle. So, over the last few years we’ve been on the hunt for hotels that are scattered around in the neighborhoods we LIVE in…here’s our custom list of alternative hotels:

• Stanyan Park Hotel - Upper Haight - Golden Gate Park

• Hotel Kabuki - Japantown - Fillmore District

• The Lodge at the Presidio - Presidio

• Cavallo Point – Sausalito (if we want to go out of the city)

• The Fairmont Heritage Place Ghirardelli Square

• Mark Hopkins Intercontinental - Nob Hill

• Fairmont Nob Hill - Nob Hill, especially at Christmas time

• 1 Hotel - Right next to the Ferry Building
